YALLFest Interviews @KalebNation
What were you like as a teen?
I was very introverted and shy, and would rarely talk to other kids my age. But I wanted to be an author, so I was constantly working on different stories. Writing was also a safe way to pass my time with little of that scary social interaction.
This is why my parents are still shocked that I’ve made a career of speaking at schools, hosting shows and posting videos of myself on Youtube. It goes to show that you CAN overcome your own natural fears if you want something badly enough!
What were your favorite books as a kid?
Definitely books by Lemony Snicket. He is a master of the middle-grade novel. I actually still haven’t read the last book in his Series Of Unfortunate Events because I can’t bear to imagine it being over and not have a sequel to look forward to.
If you had one wish what would you wish for?
A pocketwatch with two markings, GOOD and BAD, that can tell the future. Before I make any decisions, the watch’s arm would tell me if it will have a GOOD outcome or a BAD outcome.
What musicians have influenced your writing?
Thomas Newman the film score composer is almost always in my writing playlists. These days, I also like some Skrillex and Deadmau5 when I’m writing.
What are you looking forward to about YALLFest?
Getting to meet so many authors at once!
What is your favorite kind of pie?
Those chocolate chip cookie pies, with whipped cream!
